Hormone Therapy

Hormone Balancing

Hormone replacement therapy — medications containing female hormones to replace the ones the body no longer makes after menopause — used to be a standard treatment for women with hot flashes and other menopause symptoms. Hormone therapy (as it’s now called) was also thought to have the long-term benefits of preventing heart disease and possibly dementia.

Recommended for men and women is therapy using bioidentical hormones rather than synthetic products that do not remotely resemble the molecular structure of the hormones that are being replaced. Dr. Owings addresses specifically the growing need for postmenopausal women to be educated about their particular requirements. The number of women that respond negatively to the typical treatments for hot flashes, night sweats, lack of libido, and nights without sleep are astounding. She has been pleased to see firsthand that these same women respond to a natural formula and thrive as they once again feel like being a part of society again? The need for testosterone therapy with middle and older aged men is also addressed. Only in the past few years has mainstream medicine recognized how important it is to test for hormone levels in men as well as women. The results of this testing produces the ability to develop an overall plan for the active male desiring restored energy, vitality, libido and weight control.

Hormone Therapy for Men and Women

Middle age, as well as some medical situations, can cause either men or women to need some sort of hormonal therapy. Most of the times when hormonal replacement therapy is prescribed, it is for women due to menopause and involves supplementing with estrogen and progesterone, or in men due to impotence and a loss of testosterone.

Symptoms of Menopause in Women

Menopause is when a women ceases menstruating and can no longer get pregnant. It is usually a normal occurrence that happens anywhere from the late 40s to the 50s, but medical menopause can occur at any age if a women has a total hysterectomy and no longer has her ovaries. The main symptoms are the stopping of the menstrual periods, the ovaries stop producing hormones, and women can get hot flashes, weight gain, insomnia, sexual issues such as dryness or lack of desire, etc.

Hot Flashes, Night Sweats

Hot flashes may cause the woman’s body temperature to go up very quickly, and lead to night sweats where she perspires profusely and can wake up soaking wet. However, they are normally not life threatening.

Insomnia

Menopause can also cause insomnia due to declining hormones, as well as the hot flashes and night sweats causing women to wake up frequently. Plus, the insomnia could be caused by lack of estrogen that causes sleep apnea due to weight gain or other issues that causes pain.

Lack of Libido

Lack of libido in menopause can be caused by a decreased supply of blood to the vagina, as that causes dryness due to thinning vaginal walls. Plus, there is less androgen hormones and that too can cause lack of desire.

Testosterone therapy for men

There are several options for men to undergo testosterone therapy if they are suffering from low levels of testosterone. Some of these include injections, patches, gels, gums, and implanted pellets. Some possible risks are enlarged breasts, prostate cancer, bone density issues, and limited sperm production.

Weight Control

According to most doctors, hormone therapy is not responsible for weight gain in either men or women. However, in women it can cause bloating, which may lessen after you have taken them for a while. In fact, in most cases, studies have shown that hormonal therapy affects women’s weight more so than in men.

Men’s Libido Issues

Men who are experiencing low testosterone levels will have a decrease in libido. They may experience symptoms such as depression, tiredness, impotence, weak erections, and muscle weakness. Blood tests can determine if these are caused by lack of testosterone or some other medical problem.

Once a man starts taking testosterone, it can take a short while to get into their system so that it can start to help them to have increased energy levels, improved sex drive, stronger erection, better bone density and better muscle mass.

All in all, hormone replacement therapy for both men and women can help to improve several symptoms related to menopause or low testosterone levels.
