Chemical Peels
Making sure that your skin looks as clear as possible is something that is important to most people. When you have wrinkles, skin discolorations or scarring you can choose one of the many procedures out there that can help you reduce the look. One method for dealing with these issues is with chemical peels. Chemical peels are used to chemically remove the top layers of your skin and reveal new skin that will grow back smoother and healthier. The chemical peel can be performed at different levels fitted with the depth of damage that is trying to be repaired. The different levels are light, medium and deep chemical peels.

More About Chemical Peels
There are several things to be considered when having a esthetician perform a chemical peel. The first thing to consider is the depth that the peel needs to be in order to give the individual the results they seek. The more intense the therapy the more time the recovery will take. This is the first concern that should be considered when choosing a chemical peel. A light chemical peel is ideal for handling fine wrinkles, dryness of the skin and uneven skin tone. This type of a chemical peel could be accomplished once a week for up to six weeks to get the desired results.
A medium chemical peel is typically ideal of the removal of epidermis and the upper middle layer of skin known as the dermis. This is good treatment for wrinkles, acne scars and more severe uneven skin tone. A medium skin peel should be performed once every 6 or 12 months based on what your needs are and how well your skill tolerates the process. Deep chemical peels are used for removal of the mid to the lower layers of the skin. This type of peel can successfully treat deep wrinkles, precancerous growths and scars on the skin.
The chemicals typically used in chemical peels are glycolic acid or salicylic acid. As the peels are deeper levels the chemical combinations will change bringing in such chemicals as trichloroacetic acid. The peels are done in different ways based on the depth of reach. For light peels there is usually no anesthesia necessary and the process is done in only a few minutes. For a medium chemical peel cold compresses are applied after the peel and the patient might feel stinging and burning for as many as 20 minutes following the procedure.
For those having a deep chemical peel, an IV of fluids may be administered and the heart rate monitored during the procedure. Carbolic acid may be applied to the skin and the process will take place in 10 to 20 minute intervals due to the harshness of the chemicals. The entire procedure for a full facial peel could take from 60 to 90 minutes to complete. In some cases dressings may be applied for 24 to 48 hours before removal. Once the dressings are removed it will be important to protect the skin from wind, sun and any other harmful items in the environment. It may take several weeks for the new skin to grow completely and for the skin to feel normal to you.
